Page Rank v. Tags & URLs

What is "Page Rank"?

"Page Rank" is not the same as the search engine results position of a web page. It is quite different.

The "Page Rank" of a web page is improved by having "backlinks" to it from "authority" sites. "Authority" sites are considered by search engines to be web sites that have been in existence for a long time (minimum 6 months), contain hundreds or thousands of relevant web pages, and themselves have a high Page Rank.

Any Web Master, i.e., YOU, can control the number of web pages at your site, either by creating them manually or using article-spinning software to automate this process. If you use text-spinning software, you must do the job thoroughly and carefully, otherwise the results may be detrimental. (Advice on how to use article spinners can be found on the Videos page and in the article "How to Use Automated SEO Software Tools for the Best Results". Advice on how not to use automated SEO software tools can be found in the article "Risking Search Engine Rankings with Automated SEO Software".

You have less control over backlinks to your web site. Useful backlinks should be negotiated personally with web masters of sites complementary to yours, e.g., in a different aspect of the same industry, a sub-contracting manufacturer, a related specialist skill that you don't have, etc. Backlinks can also occur naturally, as visitors who like what they find on your site add a link to it on their site or blog. Such backlinks will improve your site's Page Rank, minimally if it's from only a minor site or blog, but hugely if it's from a site like CNN or the BBC! Artificial backlinks most definitely will not improve your site's Page Rank. Such artificial backlinks will, eventually, cause your web site to be penalized. This is the reason why automatic backlinking software must be avoided at all costs.

The value of Page Rank is overstated. The effort required to improve it actively is rarely worth the returned benefits. It very frequently happens that an unranked web page (i.e., not even "0" rank) with no backlinks at all, but with the keyword phrase in the file name and <title> tag, is in the third position on page 1 of Google, while one with Page Rank "5" and 9,000 backlinks, but with no keyword in its URL or any tags, appears nowhere.

In the FAQ of Google's Webmaster Forum, Google says: "... worry less about PageRank, which is just one of over 200 signals that can affect how your site is crawled, indexed and ranked. PageRank is an easy metric to focus on, but just because it's easy doesn't mean it's useful for you as a site owner. If you're looking for metrics, we'd encourage you to check out Analytics, think about conversion rates, ROI (return on investment), relevance, or other metrics that actually correlate to meaningful gains for your website or business."

As Google itself states, the Google algorithms use more than 200 criteria, Page Rank being just one of them, to determine the order of web sites in the organic search results, and these algorithms are updated weekly. In its 'Relevance' section, Google says: "When Google was founded, one key innovation was PageRank, a technology that determined the “importance” of a web page by looking at what other pages link to it, as well as other data." Notice that it says "what other pages link to it", not "how many other pages link to it", in the 'Relevance' section. This means, quite clearly, that it is the quality, not just quantity, of backlinks that determines Page Rank. If you do bother to garner backlinks, therefore, do it manually, not automatically.

This is confirmed on Google's web page 'Google-friendly sites', where it says: "Keep in mind that our algorithms can distinguish natural links from unnatural links. Natural links to your site develop as part of the dynamic nature of the web when other sites find your content valuable and think it would be helpful for their visitors. Unnatural links to your site are placed there specifically to make your site look more popular to search engines. ... Only natural links are useful for the indexing and ranking of your site."

What are "Tags"?

Fortunately, web masters have full control over the HTML tags of every web page on a site. The tags, in order of importance to search engines, are: <title>, <description> and the <h1> 'main heading' tag. The <keywords> tag carries less weight nowadays, but is useful in telling search engines what the body text is about. Other tags, although they carry a certain weight, are less important, but are worth the effort if you have the time. These are the sub-heading tags <h2> to <h6>, and the 'alt' and 'title' attributes that occur in <img> and other tags.

If you optimize your tags by including the main keyword in them, it can affect your page's search engine position profoundly, and Page Rank will make little difference. For best results, each individual web page should focus on and be optimized for one single keyword (phrase). This may sound like a superhuman task, but the Abacus SEO Editor makes short work of it!

Also very important is the first paragraph of the body text. Google looks at this for two reasons: 1. For clues to what the page is about. A well designed web page usually begins with some kind of introductory paragraph. 2. To check for plagiarism. Google may "read" even more than the first paragraph of the body text, comparing phrases and their neighbouring words to those in its vast database of billions of web pages. If it finds too many similarities, it may assume that one page is a copy of the other. It then compares the dates of publication, and ignores the later one, either lowering its position or not bothering to index it at all.

The last paragraph may also have some significance, as it's customary to summarize the body text, if a web page has been designed well.

Therefore the appearance of each page's individual keyword (phrase) in the first and last paragraphs should assist in raising its search engine position. The Abacus SEO Editor enables you to do this with a minimum of effort for every file in a folder.

And "URLs"?

If you're lucky enough to own a domain name containing your main keyword, it's more than half-way to page 1 of Google! The URL of a web page, however, consists of not only the domain name, but also the folder name (if any) and file name. These you can call whatever you wish.

By including each page's individual keyword (phrase) in its file name, you're giving the page a huge boost in the search engine results. For a human this is an extremely tedious, time-consuming and error-prone task. For the Abacus SEO Editor, however, it takes only a few seconds!

Software tools for the three essential tasks to get a website on the first page of Google

How to use article-spinning software for a multi-page content-rich website

Software to spin articles is sometimes called an article rewriter. They are both misnomers really, because they can "spin" any text, not just articles. It just happens that such software is used to spin an article more than any other kind of text document. Many people, perhaps, don't realize, therefore, that article spinners can be put to very good use to create hundreds of useful, unique, content-rich web pages also, which is a big help to get on the first page of Google.

We're starting to do that ourselves. After experimenting first with another web site, we're refining our technique, and shall apply it to this site, SEOEditor.net. This is how we'll do it, and shall continue to do it with other sites for as long as it's effective. To achieve the best long-lasting results is not a quick process, but care and patience will have their rewards.

  1. First, we submit our new web site to Google and the other major search engines, and wait until all the important pages are in the Google index. The reasoning is that, if too many web pages are in the site, Google indexes only some of them on the first visit of its "spider". Then it adds a few more at each subsequent visit. If the site contains many purely informational pages, therefore, the most important pages, e.g., the sales and product description pages, may not be indexed until much later.
  2. We research and select our keywords carefully, using the tools cited below, and list them in a text file.
  3. We write an article, with a link, and submit it manually, in its original form, to 3 or 4 of the most important article sites.
  4. If the article is long, we divide it into logical parts which can stand alone as individual articles. This greatly improves a web site's attractiveness to the search engines, as there will be fewer spun versions of more distinct web pages.
  5. We then take great care, spending whatever time it takes, to create the spin-code for each of these articles, using a third-party article rewriter (below). It is essential to spin the text as thoroughly as possible, to achieve maximum variation! This cannot be emphasized enough. If you don't do this, it will hurt you! If you've read the two articles in the previous section, you'll know exactly how to do it and understand the reasoning behind this.
  6. When we're satisfied with the spin-coded text, we make a copy of the spin-code file, and keep each copy in a separate folder. One copy of the spin-coded article(s) in its raw state will be used for submission to minor article sites, to promote our web site -- the primary purpose of an article spinner is to prepare articles for submission to article sites by means of an article submitter software tool (see how to do this below) -- and the other copy will be the basis for a multitude of unique, content-rich web pages for our site (next step).
  7. Using the spin-code copy that will become our web pages, we now insert whatever placeholders and symbols we'll need for the keyword insertion and formatting process that the Abacus SEO Editor will do for us later. (See video & support page.)
  8. The final job for the article rewriter software tool is to generate the same number of versions of the article as we have keywords in our keyword list file. If we have more than one article, we generate an equal number of versions of each article to total the number of keywords in the list. In this case, each set of spun articles is kept separately in its own folder.

    For example, if we have 500 keywords in our list, we generate 500 versions of a single article, or 100 versions of each of 5 articles.

    If you want to be really precise, as we are, you can compare the length of each of these 5 articles, and generate a number of versions for each one, proportionate to its length. So, if article 1 is the longest at, say, 40% of the total length of all 5 articles, we'd use 40% of the keywords and generate 200 versions of it. If article 2 contains 30% of the total number of words in all 5 articles, we'd use 30% of the keywords and generate 150 versions of it. If the other three articles are of similar length to each other, that is, about 10% each of the total number of words, we'd use 10% of the keywords and generate 50 versions of each. The reasoning behind this is that the shorter the article is, the more similarities there will be between the spun versions. Therefore we spin fewer versions of shorter articles.

Now we process the prepared article files in such a way as to make them a magnet for searchers as web pages.

Using the Abacus SEO Editor to process spun articles

Using the Abacus SEO Editor, we convert the ordinary, plain-text spun articles into fully optimized, formatted web pages.
(See the video walkthroughs and the support page for full details of how to do this.)

Each web page:

  • Is renamed with one of the keywords in the keyword list file, with any spaces changed to hyphens.
    (Article spinners generate only a single file name, sequentially numbered.)
  • Has a <title> tag containing the same keyword.
  • Has a <description> meta tag containing the same keyword.
  • Has a <keywords> meta tag containing the same keyword.
  • Has an <h1> 'main heading' tag containing the same keyword.
  • Begins with a customized first paragraph, containing the same keyword, a hyperlink to the web site home page and the web site main title.
  • Ends with a customized last paragraph, containing the same keyword, a hyperlink to the web site home page and the web site main title.
  • Contains the same keyword in the main body text in any specified place(s). SEO experts agree that "keyword density" should be between 1% and 3%. So, for example, in a page of 400 words we would insert the keyword twice in the customized first paragraph, once in the customized last paragraph, and once somewhere sensible in the middle of the text. This is 4 keywords in 400 total words, making 1% keyword density. If the text contained 500 words, we'd put the keyword twice, spread apart, in the main body text.
  • Has plain-text paragraphs converted to HTML paragraphs or line breaks.
  • Has any other kind of HTML formatting, e.g., <h2> to <h6> headings, bold text, italics, underlined text, etc.

With the Abacus SEO Editor, we then create a site map, which contains a hyperlinked list of all the web pages it has created. We add a link to the site map on the home page, so that search engines can find them.

Finally, we upload multiple files at once, and the site map file, using the Abacus SEO Editor's FTP facility. During our first experiment it was probably a mistake to upload all 450 files at once. We were impatient, and Google probably guessed that we used mass-production software. Too late now! Because Google likes to see natural growth of a web site, that is, a few pages at a time as they are produced by hand, it is wise to upload 3 or 4 pages each day, amending the master site map file accordingly and uploading that with them. The best result is more likely if you have patience. But that's for you to decide.

Although this method can get a website on the first page of Google, it is not without risk. It is possible that, if Google finds machine-generated web pages, they may be de-indexed. We've never seen it happen, but Google does disapprove of them.

Submitting the spun articles to article sites

If you've been thorough with your text-spinning in step 4 above, the spun versions of articles that you will submit en masse to article sites should be quite different from the pages on your web site. You'll then have many unique articles residing on several hundred external web sites, each with a link to yours.

Now we use the other copy of the spin-code file that we made in step 5 above.

The software we use for submitting articles is described below. We open our spin-coded text file in this software tool, and complete the step-by-step process of filling in the article's title, brief summary (also spin-coded), keywords, author details and the all-important hyperlink to our web site.

The software has already registered active accounts at 700 article sites for us. All we do now is tell the software how many articles we want to submit per day. As with web pages, and for the same reasons, it is not a good idea to submit articles all at once! The default is 10, so it'll take 70 days to submit an article to 700 article sites. If we've split a long article into several smaller ones, we submit them every day, too, but at different times of the day. You can specify a time for each article, and the software submits them automatically at that time.

The software needed to perform these tasks

Keyword Research and Selection

We use three keyword research tools:

Google AdWords Keyword Tool: This online keyword research tool is possibly all you'll need. If you select the "Show ideas containing only my search terms" option, you get exactly that. If your search term is singular, you don't get the plural; you need to enter the plural to get different results. If you don't select this option, you get a huge number of words which, Google suggests, are related to your search term. Many of them will probably be unsuitable, so you'll need to page through them all, selecting those you want. Then you download them in a spreadsheet format.

Keywords Magnet or Keyword Snatcher: We bought 'Keyword Snatcher' first, and are very pleased with it. Then we bought 'Keywords Magnet', because it has a couple of useful additional keyword and competitor site analysis tools. They both work in the same way; that is, they capture the suggested words you see as you type your search term into the Google web site Search box, letter by letter. They therefore usually return significantly more keywords than the Google AdWords Keyword Tool.

As a professional software engineering company, paying great attention to detail for ease of use in our own software, we consider all three of these tools to have usability issues. Nevertheless, they do the job very well, and that's more important.

Article-Spinning and Article Submission

Magic Article Rewriter and Magic Article Submitter:

We're combining the two distinct aspects of article-spinning and article submission here, because, although we could have bought these two software products separately, we saved a lot of money by buying them as a package.

As with the other software mentioned, these two products have their usability foibles, but the results they produce more than compensate for the annoyances.

The Magic Article Rewriter ticks all the boxes for us, once we figured out how to get around its idiosyncrasies. It suggests synonyms, and a quick click on the suitable ones adds them to the spin-code. A great advantage is that you can add new synonyms and phrases to its database for reuse in the future. Furthermore, you can save a whole list of synonyms for any word as a "token". Then, whenever any one of the words in the list is encountered again, with one click you can add the entire list to the spin-code! This is a tremendous time-saver. It goes yet further... A click of another button adds the current selection to every occurrence of the word in the file. (Pressing the <Ctrl> key while the caret is in the spin-code also has this effect, which is really weird and annoying!)

As for the Magic Article Submitter, its performance is little short of miraculous, in our professional opinion. Although setting up a connection is difficult to understand the first time you try to do it, when you've done it once, it's no longer a problem, and you should never need to do it again, unless you want multiple accounts. Preparing an article for submission is easy. A brilliant bonus is that a user-defined number of versions of the article can be submitted to article sites at specified times of the day, on specified days of the week. This gives the search engines the impression that articles are written and submitted by hand.

We've seen several article-spinning software tools. Some are as cheap as $7, and are little more than useless. The Magic Article Rewriter is, by far, the cream of the crop, and is very reasonably priced, considering what it is capable of achieving. With article-spinners, you definitely get what you pay for.
